str2_GusSpartanB_xs-770x470Spartan Races, and other obstacle courses races, can be scary if you are not prepared.  The main point of these races is to challenge you in ways you probably have not been challenged before.  it will get you out of your comfort zone and make you feel like quitting.

The race doesn’t have to be this way.  You see, most people sign up for a race thinking it will be fun, or maybe getting talked into it by friends and coworkers.  Next they might hit the gym for a few workouts or maybe go on a few runs to prepare.  Then they get to the race and are beaten down or are disappointed that they didn’t properly prepare.

Spartan Racing is a unique sport to train for and requires a unique training program.  The Spartan Program has 7 Pillars that must be focused on.  Many will only incorporate 2 or 3 of these, but really all must be addressed to maximize performance in your race.  These 7 Pillars are Stamina, Power, Athleticism, Readiness, Tenacity, Attitude, and Nutrition.  A specific training plan focusing on each of these factors is what truly will make a Spartan Warrior ready for any obstacle thrown in their way.

Let’s face it.  Spartan Races should be challenging, but they should be fun not scary.

But most people just don’t realize what they are getting into.  Being in “good shape” is not enough to get through these challenging courses.  You need a plan.  Without one you might fail some of the most commonly failed obstacles, such as:

  • The Spear Throwhandwall
  • The Multi Rig
  • The Rope Climb
  • The Z Wall
  • The Tyrolean Traverse

These are just a few of the obstacles that are failed do to lack of planning and/or lack of training.  But these can easily be conquered when you are properly prepared.  Not only is failing an obstacle a concern since you will have to do 30 burpees instead, many people are just not prepared for the physical challenge and end up suffering from some of the most common Spartan related injuries:

  • Rotator Cuff Tears
  • Shoulder Impingement
  • Elbow Epicondylitis
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Hamstring Strains
  • Knee Impact Related Injuries

Many of these injuries can be avoided with a better program.  Imagine training your butt off for your race then spraining your ankle jumping over a wall or tearing your rotator cuff performing the monkey bars, and not being able to finish the race.  Not that every injury can be prevented, but many never should have happened in the first place.

They key is better movement, better strength, better stamina, and better tactical skill.
